Your Guide to Engagement Ring Stones And the Most Popular Engagement Ring Stone Shapes

Looking over a selection of engagement rings is totally exhilarating, but can also be totally overwhelming for the best of us. We may see certain styles that we find appealing or are drawn to, but the fact is most of us know very little about the actual ring and stone itself. We’ve rounded up the top 6 engagement ring stone styles and provided you with a little background on each.

The Round Cut Stone

The Round cut stone is by far the most popular of all the cuts. This particular cut is formed with numerous facets- 58 to be exact, so it exudes exceptional brilliance. The cone shape provides maximized light return through the top of the stone.

The Cushion Cut Stone

The Cushion cut stone combines a square cut stone with rounded corners. The Cushion cut stone is a classic cut that dates back almost 200 years. Cushion cut was the most popular stone shape until it was replaced by the Round Brilliant cut.And even today, Cushion cut stone is considered to be the iconic and beloved by most and its popularity is gaining. The Cushion cut is features 68 facets and designed to let maximum light through.

The Princess Cut

The Princess cut is the 2nd most popular shape, next to a Round Brilliant cut, and is trendy with a younger bride. Its distinctive cut is square or rectangular and at side view looks like an inverted pyramid. The Princess faceting style is unique and completely different from that of any other stone cut.Just like the round cut it showcases 58 facets that sparkle in abundance.

The Emerald Cut

When you want a gorgeous, distinct vintage-style diamond, the Emerald cut is an ideal choice. Emerald cut stones are also known as a step cut. They give the illusion of longer, more slender fingers. It has clean lines and perfect symmetry. Emerald cut stone has 57 stunning facets. Its very glamorous and stylish.

The Oval Cut

The Oval cut stone is making a huge comeback since its origin in the 1960s. The shape is cut into a perfectly symmetrical design which is unlike other stone cuts. The Oval cut combines the sparkle of the elongated shape of a Marquise cut with the Round Brilliant cut.

The Pear Cut

The Pear Cut stone is a stand out star and wonderfully elongates your finger. The pear-shape itself is a combination of a Round Brilliant cut and a Marquise cut. Although the similar Marquise Cut is considered a bit more boat-shaped.

The Asscher cut

For a regal flair look no further, the Asscher cut is a truly royal stone. Asscher cut is a modified square cut and is similar to the emerald, it has 58 facets and a wider set. It was extremely popular in the 1920’s and was featured in many Art Deco designs. Today this cut sees a resurgence of interest as many celebrities chose Asscher cut as their favorite stone for an engagement ring. This is has been called after Elizabeth Taylor, the queen of elegance.

The Heart Cut

The romantic Heart cut stone shape is the ultimate symbol of love and affection. The Heart cut although is thought to be a modern cut, goes further back in time when the Heart shaped stone ring was presented to Queen Elizabeth in the 16th century. Due to its unique shape and design it captures the light in abundance and shines brilliantly.

The Marquise Cut

The shape of a Marquise cut can maximize carat weight, giving you a much larger-looking stone. Due to the length of the marquise fingers appear long and slender. This ring is often compared to a boat due to elongated ends at both edges. The bride who wears a marquise cut diamond is sure to receive a lot of attention. The pointed ends make this shape the most fragile and the most expensive of brilliant style cuts. It has a total of 56 facets, construction of which requires a lot of experience and the delicacy of its sharp points demands utmost precaution. Nowadays this shape is very popular for engagement rings.

10 Ways to Avoid Online Dating Scams this Valentine’s

(As featured on KerriZane.com)

There’s nothing worse then investing both your heart and your money into what you thought was your next big love, only to find out he was a scam artist. Yet, that is exactly what is happening to many unsuspecting daters every year.  Unfortunately, online romance scams are big business costing those looking for love money, time and often leaving them with a broken heart.  What are some of the top schemes this time of the year?

  • Don’t Open the FakeValentine’s Day E-Card—an online dating con artist may take a more secretive approach and email you a Valentine’s Day deal eCard with hyperlinks that cause a breach of your crucial identity info and contacts. Never open an eCard from someone who is courting you online or anyone else you don’t truly know. They may try to steal your personal info by pretending to sell you “gifts” like fake flowers and jewelry.
  • Beware of the Catphisher—you might have heard about catfishing and questioned how others could be so naive, but remember that these online crooks are extremely cunning. Con artists dupe others into believing they are people they are not by devising dating profiles on accredited dating websites, via social media, and by emailing with the main goal of stealing money for fiscal gain. These appalling imposters trick others looking for a true, loving relationship (especially around Valentine’s Day) by professing their adoration early on and then asking their trusting victims to wire them money for a variety of purposes. Many of these scammers request money for a plane ticket to visit or for an emergency. Be wise and never send them monetary funds for any reason.
  • Sextortion Can Leave You Exposed—a new online dating scheme has been coined “sextortion”, where a scammer convinces someone they are online dating to send intimate photos after establishing a phony online relationship. Then the schemer extorts money from the victim by threatening to publicize the intimate photos and videos. The duped victims usually pay out the money and keep the issue to themselves, as they are too embarrassed to tell the authorities. These shams can last for months on end and affect women, men and even senior citizens.

Fortunately, there are some things you can do to avoid being taken advantage of by these heartless scam artists:

  • Is your date asking for money? Alarm bells should go off if the person you are chatting with asks you for money, especially if it is early on and if you’ve never had the chance to meet in person. Schemers will often request money to help take care of a sick family member, a short term loan to pay a monthly rent, or money to travel and visit you if they live in another state.
  • Will your online love interest meet face to face? Con artists will use many excuses, such as work, a family illness, or shared custody of a child, as a way to not have to meet in person. Or, they will set up a date to meet and then cancel for a variety of reasons. It is smart to only accept messages from online dating matches who live close to you, as there is no good reason to establish a relationship with someone you will have a difficult time meeting in real life.
  • Does your love match have a scarce online profile? If the person you are corresponding with has a dating profile with very limited info and only one photo, that could be a sign that you’re dealing with a swindler. Con artists who don’t want to be liable for the content of their dating profile will simply leave it blank. If they are too lazy to spend time posting truly self-descriptive content, you should probably refrain from corresponding with them. Also, be wary if the person has less than 100 friends unless he/she is older.
  • Are little white lies harmless? A majority of people stretch the truth a bit, so determine what is acceptable and unaccaptable. Online daters want to show themselves in the best light possible, so men may say they are taller than they really are and women may not accurately describe their physical attributes. Many online dating site users accept white lies as part of the deal, so decide where to draw the line.
  • Are you talking to a live human being? When corresponding with others online, ensure that the flow of conversation makes sense to confirm if you’re talking to a live person or a robot profile. Switch up the convo to determine if your correspondent is able to keep up with you. If they cannot switch gears, it is likely that you are talking with a robot responder providing predestined responses.
  • Is key personal information verified? Conduct online searches to verify your match’s key information. If you’re especially troubled, you can use the help of a background checking service to confirm whether or not your suspicions are valid. This is a great way to see if your love interest’s name matches his or her photo, Facebook profile, etc.  This will also help you discover if your suitor owns a gun, owes child support or is still married, or has financial difficulties or more than just a few speeding tickets.

Tips For Protecting Your Delivered Packages

(Tips featured on Momentumnation.com)

With a little pre-planning and a few simple steps you can prevent your packages and deliveries from being stolen from your front door or driveway.

–       If you live in a city or high-foot traffic area, consider using an Amazon Locker. You can have the packages sent to any Amazon Locker location and can then pick them up at your own convenience.

–       Send your packages to your office address if you know you won’t be home during the day to accept them.

–       Consider sending your packages to a trusted neighbor you know will be home during the day. Make sure to treat your neighbor to a Starbuck’s gift card or another small gift for helping out.  Offer to do the same for him or her on other days.

–       For USPS deliveries, put a mail hold on your mail/deliveries for a limited time and pick your packages up at the post office instead.

cardboard-box-155480_1280

–       UPS and Fed Ex allow you to leave directions for where to drop-off packages. Follow their shipping details so you know what date the delivery is anticipated. Leave a note attached to your door with where you want the delivery to be left (back door, side of house, etc.). Just make sure you write “For UPS” or “For Fed Ex” on the outside and fold the note over or put it in an envelope. Then anyone walking or driving by will not see packages on your front porch.

–       Most shipping providers, such as UPS and Fed Ex, allow you to have a postponed delivery time until you know someone will be home. They also give you the ability to have it shipped to pick-up in person.

–       Require a signature before the delivery drivers leave a package at your door.

–       Use a P.O. box for the month so that the packages are shipped to the post office and deposited in your P.O. box. Just confirm that the retailer allows shipments to a P.O. box beforehand.

–       Speak to the delivery company to find out what time they are typically in your neighborhood. Follow their delivery status online to find out the expected date of delivery and try to have someone home during that time to accept the package.

–       Place a camera above your doorway (even if it’s a non-working one), because if a thief thinks they might be recognized on video, they may be less likely to offend.

–       When purchasing from a store that also offers a brick and mortar location, have the items shipped to the local store for pick up. It is a bit less convenient, but you can stop by after work or over the weekend to pick the items up.

–       Make sure the path to your door is open, clear and very visible to neighbors and the street. If thieves can shield themselves behind large bushes, it will be that much easier for them to go unnoticed.

–       Make it look like you’re home!  Keep a car parked in the driveway, play music inside your home, or keep the TV on. Oftentimes, the sound will carry outside your front door.

6 Authentic Ways To Impress Your Partner on Valentine’s Day Without Going Broke

(As featured on GoodNewsNetwork.com)

Most people expect the typical gift of flowers and chocolates for Valentine’s Day from their partner. This year go beyond the cliché gifts and think from the heart to create an extra special Valentine’s Day with your love. You’ll find a fresh new perspective and your partner will be totally surprised.

If you want to be romantic, but don’t buy-into the commercialism, check out these 6 ways to impress and be yourself, right from the heart:

Plant a Tree:

Buy a beautiful flowering tree in honor of your Valentine’s Day together and when spring comes you can plant the tree in your backyard. The tree can represent the growth in your relationship over time and each year it will be a special reminder of that Valentine’s Day in your relationship.

Create a DIY Gift:

Homemade is truly best (unless we’re talking about a diamond ring). Show off your crafty side by making your Valentine a giftrather than buying one. If you knit, try your hand at knitting a pair of mittens with your initials on the palm side or maybe a special word that means something to you both. Or you can dig out the colored construction paper, heart doilies and glue. Channel the elementary school Valentine’s Day cards of your past. Cut, glue and decorate your way to a beautiful Valentine’s Day card sans the Hallmark stamp.

Make a Photo Gift:

Nothing captures your real life and love together like the photos you’ve collected throughout your relationship. There are so many creative ways to make a gift of photos. The only hard part will be deciding which one to do. A few photo gift ideas include a collection of Instagram photos in a flip book, a video montage of photos set to music and a hard cover photo book that you design and upload photos to. You can add your own special message to any of these gifts as well. This can also be made into an annual gift. Who wouldn’t love getting a collection of memories to cherish forever?

Plan Ahead Dates:

Whether you plan for a month or a year, organize dates ahead of time and package the plans into a gift for your Valentine. This will show your partner that you definitely see a future for the two of you! Come up with ideas that leave a big impression and build lasting memories. Plan a picnic in the park with an outdoor concert/movie; a trip to the museum or science center; join an Earth Day clean-up and planting initiative; plan a board game/beer tasting night in; a trip to a local vineyard for wine tasting; an all-day movie marathon with your favorite collective movies and snacks; a date night to see an up and coming band or comedian; a visit to the local farmer’s market or flea market; go strawberry or apple picking; go on a DIY pub crawl; find a drive-in movie theater; or rent bikes from your local bike share program and tour around your city. Take some time to divide your date activities by month and place them in a booklet you can both reference back to.

How To Flirt 101: Where to Start

(As featured on EverydayPowerBlog.com)

Flirting. It’s one of those words that typically strikes a pleasing chord with most people. Flirting is a playful way someone lets you know they’re interested in you, finds you attractive, feels a sense of chemistry, and wants to get to know you. Even if you’re attached to someone else or married, it gives you a boost to know you are still attractive to others. And isn’t that the point of flirting? When done right, it makes the other person feel good about themselves and more open to meeting you. Right off the bat let’s do away with the notion of cheesy pick-up lines (“I’m not a photographer, but I can picture you and me together.”) and offers to buy a drink as an introduction. It’s not that they don’t work, because sometimes they do, but if you want to be taken seriously and get someone’s attention in a favorable way, go with a more sincere, less intrusive approach. People want to see and feel your charisma, good manners and a sense of humor (but still no pick-up lines!)—it piques their interest. The way you approach someone is also their first impression of you, so make it a good one.

How To Flirt 101: Where to Start

Does the idea of flirting with someone cause you to feel instant pangs of nausea and lightheadedness? You’re not alone. Flirting is putting yourself out there and can be a bit nerve-wracking for the best of us. Talking to someone you don’t know, even when you’re not flirting, can be intimidating for some people. Think of a business meeting you’ve attended and you’re standing next to a coworker you’ve never met, making initial introductions and small talk. It can be downright awkward. So understand that it’s perfectly normal to feel uneasy. Try associating the butterflies in your stomach with pleasant feelings—a bit of a natural high—if you will. If it’s the fear of rejection lingering in the back of your mind, remember there’s nothing gained if we don’t put ourselves out there once in awhile. And chances are you may never have to see this person again if you so choose. If you’re nervous and wondering how you’re going to appear confident, there are techniques to appearing confident even when you’re not. Whether you’re flirting over text, online or in-person, remember to be yourself, strike a balance between revealing your feelings and keeping the person intrigued. Here are a few clever ways to engage someone new in a positive way.

Start off with a great “eye smile.”

A good eye smile will communicate interest non-verbally. It also will give you a sense of the person’s openness. Try not to appear overly confident, go with poised and cool. Don’t be put off if they seem a bit weary because being on the other end of someone’s flirting can cause nervousness, too, especially if they are shy. Take note, make eye contact through multiple glances, but don’t stare, break the eye contact here and there to keep things from getting too intense. You do not want to come off creepy or like a stalker. If you’re a woman attempting to flirt with a man, lowering your gaze and looking up at the guy again through lowered lashes is usually a winner.

Wondering how to kick off a conversation once you are in front of the object of your flirtation?

Start the conversation off with a non-cliché type of compliment (“I really like your outfit” or “Have you been here before?”) or mention the setting (“This place is really hopping tonight, I’ve never seen it like this before, have you?”). Are you at a mutual friend’s birthday party or maybe a business networking function? Say something about it. Open up the conversation with something lighthearted that will engage the person. Your best bet is leaving the ice breaker open-ended giving the other person a reason to answer, even if it’s simply to say “thank you.” What you say isn’t important, you are simply inviting the person to talk with you. Make sure you’re using eye contact when you’re initially talking to the person. There’s nothing odder than talking to someone for the first time and their eyes are looking everywhere but at you.

Keep the conversation relaxed yet interesting.

Ask them light, easy to answer questions and tell a few original jokes (keep them clean and avoid any political or religious based jokes) to lighten the mood and get a laugh. Make the other person feel comfortable so you can begin to develop a friendship, which is the basis of a great relationship later on. Keep in mind how many women say one of their favorite traits in a man is one that makes them laugh. This is closely followed by a guy who really listens. And men, if a woman approaches you, appreciate her confidence. Guys are usually the ones expected to make the first move so it takes a bit of stress off if the woman is making the first move. Even if the connection is initially there for both of you, remember not to be clingy. Give the person some space after you’ve talked for a while. Walk around, grab a drink and talk with other friends. Don’t project neediness.

One of the most important parts of flirting with someone new is knowing when to walk away.

You should know relatively fast if the person isn’t into you and your flirtations go unreturned. If they don’t respond or seem preoccupied or disinterested, it’s time to graciously make your exit. With that said, try and read their body language and expressions. There is a chance they’re just shy. If you can’t quite tell, go ahead and excuse yourself and your reason for moving on (“I have to go meet up with my friends. Maybe I’ll catch you later” or “I’m going to go grab a drink, hopefully I’ll see you again tonight”). Never feel embarrassed or bad for flirting and attempting to meet someone new. You really have nothing to lose and everything to gain and pat yourself on the back for trying. Connections are missed every day because someone was too scared to make that move.

So you think you’ve made a love connection, what do you do now?

Be sure to do your due diligence before handing out your phone number and setting up a date. Take the time to learn more about who they are, their values, interests, background, etc. to make sure there’s a fit.  If you have mutual friends, ask them about your potential date.  Then start small by meeting for a cup of coffee and build from there.

Orange is the New Black Star Alysia Reiner: “Be present in every moment— with your kids, with your work, with your workout.”

{Blog Post featured on Parents Canada on behalf of Celebrity Baby Scoop 2.8.14}

Orange Is the New Black star Alysia Reiner recently opened up to Celebrity Baby Scoop about her 5-year-old daughter Livia, the benefits of staying active and her hit Netflix series. When asked about her daughter, she shared, “She is pure heaven. I am so smitten. She is a little scientist – she created the character ‘Volcano Girl’ to be for Halloween – who wants to take the energy from volcanoes and turn them into electricity. She is super goofy and loves to make everyone laugh. But she is also so kind and loving. When asked how she balances health and fitness, a busy career, and being a mom, she said, “I think we are all sometimes looking for that magic combination or equation — be it in our schedule or workouts. Honestly, I think for me for today the best advice I could give myself today is gratitude and breathe. Be present in every moment — with your kids, with your work, with your workout. Whatever you are doing, do it to the fullest. And lots of gratitude for the moment — find the magic.” Alysia feels strongly about fitness and health and says, “I think staying active is so important. I actually just talked about the importance of fitness for moms in an article for well&good, but I think it is equally important to stay active with your kids. They do what you do.”

You can watch Alysia in the Season 1 of Orange is the New Black on Netflix. Alysia shares about the show, “We have the best cast in the world!”
